Hamilton-lovin’

I’m shocked at this article. Really expected better from Alan Henry - as respected F1 journalist as you can get. Lost a lot of respect for him now.

How any serious journalist can produce such utter nonsense is beyond me.

Debut 1-2

Fantastic 1-2 for BMW.

Quick quiz: what other team(s) also had a 1-2 for their debut win? And when/where?

F1 2.0

I see McLaren are getting in on this whole web2.0 malarkey. They now have a facebook page…

Pity they didn’t spend some time making their website more interesting (though they did remove mention of Coughlan from the bios - eventually).

On the possibility of a 2008 McLaren ban

Nearly 10 years ago Mosley had this to say about why the FIA chose not to punish Schumacher for his slip of the hand at Jerez:

Mosley said that the World Council had considered banning Schumacher in 1998 but had concluded that to do so would be “futile, because there is no driver competing in 1998 who would not be ready to accept a ban in 1999 if he could win the Championship in 1998″.

Should the worst happen to McLaren this week, will Max remember that 10 years ago he removed the possibility of a 2008 ban for McLaren?

Public Service Announcement 2: Jenson Button

(Maybe I should make this a regular series…)

While Jenson Button did out-score everyone from the time of his win until the end of the season (ie the last 6 races) last year he did not out-score everyone in the second half of the season.

Public Service Announcement: Engine Rules

Just correcting repeated incorrect information from over the weekend - from blogs, podcasts and news sites - about rules that haven’t changed in a few years.

If a driver’s engine needs to be changed before qualifying he suffers a ten place grid penalty. If the engine needs to be changed after qualifying starts he goes to the back of the grid. It’s that simple. And it’s been that way since the stupid multi-race engine rules were introduced.

2007 Calendar takes shape

18 races with Australia back in as the opener and then the Malaysian and Bahrain GPs. And no visits to new tracks.

Only one German race as expected. And only one Japanese race - so no place for Suzuka - just another Tilkedrome at Mt Fuji.

But Spa is back. Not that Bernie is happy about it.

Traditional races such as the British and Belgian GP will be on the calendar, as will the French GP - “Yes, unfortunately. Same old shit,” said Ecclestone.

Nice to see he’s happy about Spa after they’ve gone and fucked with the track to please him and his wish for more room for rich people who know nothing about the sport.

Qualifying session 3 shortened?

F1fanatic is reporting that the F1 Commision have decided to shorten the third part of qualifying to 15 minutes to reduce the pointless fuel wastage. I still think they’d be better off without any of this race fuel nonsense in qualifying at all.

Bridgestone selected as sole tyre supplier

The World Motor Sport Council met in Paris on July 5, 2006. The following decisions were taken:

FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Bridgestone has been selected as the official tyre supplier to the FIA Formula One World Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2010*.

Microsoft MES has been selected as the official ECU supplier to the FIA Formula One World Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Due to a significant increase in cornering speeds in Formula One this season, the World Motor Sport Council agreed to consult with the Formula One Technical Working Group regarding possible measures to slow the cars.

*Note to editors: In the absence of a second tyre company Bridgestone will be the sole tyre supplier to the FIA Formula One World Championship for 2007. Bridgestone’s contract with the FIA to be the official tyre supplier begins in 2008.

——————————————————————–

No surprise with B’stone getting the gig anyway.

And not only do we have to suffer a spec ECU, but it’ll have Microsoft software running on it. Cue the standard jokes…

FIA/AMD 2006 survey

Max Mosley, FIA President said, “The first FIA/AMD survey was enormously helpful for us as we developed the regulations for the sport in 2008 and beyond.”

Very helpful indeed as Max completely ignored the wishes of the majority of fans last time out. But sure we might as well try again. The survey is here:

Spec ECU open to tender

The FIA have opened tender for for the spec ECU they want to be used from 2008 -2010. While some people think it’s a good idea, this post from the forums shows why it isn’t and how the problem could be solved without introducing spec parts.

Ide’s licence revoked.

From here:

SUPER AGURI F1 TEAM confirms that the FIA Permit Office has retracted Yuji Ide’s Super License. He will therefore not be participating in any further official FIA Formula One World Championship events this year.

It is with sadness and regret that the team accepts this decision, however Aguri Suzuki and A.Company (Japan) shall continue to seek driving opportunities for Yuji and hopefully a path back into Formula One.

As a result, Franck Montagny will drive once again for the SAF1 Team at the forthcoming Spanish Grand Prix and the Monaco Grand Prix whilst discussions with a number of parties continue regarding the permanent positions of second race seat and third driver.

I think that’s a disgraceful decision by the FIA. They should have been putting pressure on SA to give Ide a proper seat, and more testing time. To revoke his (legitimately earned) licence means he can’t even be third driver. And there have been far worse race drivers over the years, let alone third drivers. Anyone remember Deletraz? Or Chanoch Nissany?

Talk about it on the F1 Forum.
