Has Massa got what it takes?
July 8th, 2008
Massa’s race at Silverstone was a disaster, from watching the TV I got the impression he spent most of his race doing little pirouettes onto the grass. It may be beautiful to watch and I’m sure brought tears to the eyes of many a ballet teacher, but “formula 1 has the best drivers in the world” it was not.
What surprises me now after the race is that no excuses are being offered.
Joint world championship leader Felipe Massa was at a loss to explain his catalogue of errors in the rain-hit British Grand Prix, after finishing last on track two laps down, having spun no less than five times.

The Ferrari President even said his piece
“I hope we’ll manage to win our eighth title in ten years,” he was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. “We will (manage it) if we don’t carry on doing stupid things.
“Obviously I wasn’t pleased with what I saw yesterday, but I hope it’s a useful lesson. Knowing my men, I’m certain it is.”

I think Massa has surprised us all this year with his ability to match and sometimes even surpass Raikkonen, but the question has to be asked - does he have the ability to win a Championship for Ferrari and if not, why is he in the team?

Yes, Massa has the ability - but only on a dry, sunny day when he leads from pole to flag. He was always a driver with bad habits, and he demonstrates a real lack of finesse behind the wheel, especially in bad conditions, or when he is mixing with the midfield. But, don’t forget that even Michael Schumacher achieved most of his victories in clear air - and had some truly shocking races when he found himself back in the pack.
Massa is capable of pulling off a WDC - if the weather holds. I think I would be right in saying we’ve had more ‘unpredictable’ races than usual this year; but if the norm returned, Massa stands every bit as much of a chance as Kimi.

Why Ferrari didn’t put him on full wets is beyond me. He was at the back of the pack the whole race. What have you got to lose?

He’s fucking quick when he’s on form, but he’s seems too Jecky and Hyde. We must remember he is still relatively young and is a lot less erratic than when he first graced us with his presence,

He will be alright, He’s still developing. I will say around Mid season 2009 he will start to be more consistent.
