The big rumour in the paddock of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve late on Friday was that F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone is hatching a plot for a breakaway championship.
These rumours come up every few years (e.g. the GPMA recently) and invariably the group threatening to split and the FIA kiss and make up. There are some hard negotiations going on between Mosley and Ecclestone at the moment and with Max in a politically awkward position (no pun intended), perhaps someone felt that a few judicious rumours of a split might focus FIA minds.
The Telegraph has a harsher take on it
The move is seen as the only solution to the problem of sleaze-coated FIA president, Max Mosley, who won a vote of confidence in Paris this week following revelations about his private life two months ago. Ecclestone and the teams accept that Mosley, water tight within the political confines of the FIA, will not budge before his term in office ends in November 2009. The answer therefore is to go it alone.
Don’t forget also that the Concorde Agreement expired at the end of December 2007.
