Indy and Champcar to merge?
March 24th, 2006
Grandprix.com are reporting
Indy Racing League founder Tony George and Champ Car’s Kevin Kalkhoven are now finally admitting that they are talking about merging the two self-destructive championships
We won’t forgive them for the past though - maybe a warning as to the future of F1 should the GPMA come to fruition?

Kalkhoven bought the cosworth engine division of ford to ensure a supply of engines to champ car in the wake of pull outs by some of the manufacturers. Although details of the merger have not emerged it would appear that the requirement for cosworth in either league could diminsih dramatically.
In this case what impact will it have on F1 ?
Williams have shown that the Cosworth engine is the classof the field, but they have indicated that they want to return as a manufacturer backed team and are rumoured to be going to run a toyota engine rebadged as a lexus .
Of the remaining teams only MF1 and the redbull teams do not have a works engine.
With all the money that redbull have at their disposal the mole has suggested that they might buy Cosworth of Kolkhoven for about the price of they wowuld pay to supply both teams as customer engines.
With Redbull snopping around VW it might even be that VW could buy cosworth and provide a works engine to Redbull .
Looking at the money spent by both Toyota and Honda this would prove to be a very significant move , and one which would be much more cost effective.

It’ll be great to get the US open wheel people on the same page again, however, whatever George and Kalkoven put together, it will be something that F1 should not be.
Unfortunately, Mosley doesn’t seem to see this, and at present the GPMA seem to be the only serious (we hope so?) entity bent on protecting the technological preeminence of F1..

Hey
Just wanted to mention that Kevin and Anton (George) make strange bedfellows. However, if NASCAR were to buy the speedway, there’s no way that Champ will eve find itself racing there. It’ll become purely and only NASCAR. Tony? Well, the IRL is going nowhere and he’s losing money. Does he want to sell the Indy? Don’t think so. Besides Kalkhoven’s got 30 cars going in Atlantics, the feeder series of Champ Car. But with no Indy 500, those 30 cars mean nothing.
