Villeneuve penalized for engine change

Jacques Villeneuve will incur a 10-spot penalty on the starting grid for this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix after his team elected to change the engine prior to Saturday’s qualifying session.

“Our investigations into the breakages after Bahrain and Malaysia revealed that some components have not met their required production tolerances,” said BMW motorsport chief Mario Theissen.

“Our short-term reaction has been to build new engines with hand-selected components that best met these rigorous requirements. We have two of these revised engines here.

“One is already installed in Nick’s car, and Jacques will get the second in time for qualifying after Saturday’s morning practice session. As a result he will lose 10 positions on the grid.”

“That’s a pity,” said Villeneuve about the engine change after finishing 12th in Friday’s practice session. “The balance of the car is very good, and I’m really happy with its speed.”

Villeneuve was entering the second of two race weekends with his current BMW engine.

Does Formula 1 need Ferrari? - Linksheaven Forums

There’s been an interesting discussion on the forums as to whether or not F1 needs Ferrari.

The consensus, even amongst the non-Ferrari fans is that Formula 1 needs Ferrari, but equally we believe that Ferrari may need Formula 1 itself.

Grandprix.com are reporting

Indy Racing League founder Tony George and Champ Car’s Kevin Kalkhoven are now finally admitting that they are talking about merging the two self-destructive championships

We won’t forgive them for the past though - maybe a warning as to the future of F1 should the GPMA come to fruition?

F1 Power Rankings - Malaysia

The new post-Malaysian power rankings have been published. You can view them here. Williams take a bit of a hit as it seems they can’t last 2 races, but it’s good news for Fisichella and the Beemers.

Ferrari gives you wings

There has been surprisingly little discussion of the Malaysian GP during the week, both on our forums and on other websites. I’m not entirely sure why that was, maybe it was just lacking in a bit of controversy?

One controversy that has been bubbling away and threatening to explode in a public fashion has been the now infamous Ferrari flexing (or not) wings. The latest news from Crash.net is that Ferrari have agreed to bring revised wings to Melbourne - I wonder just how “revised” these wings will be - are we going to see 100% adherence to the rules, or are we going to see Ferrari just going far enough to get the FIA off its back. If its the latter, expect the rest of the grid to kick up a much louder protest than what we can see currently.
