Schumacher to buy Renault F1 Team?

February 18th, 2006

Click to enlargeAccording to Eddie Jordan, Michael Schumacher may be considering owning his own F1 team, possibly buying the Remault F1 team from Renualt in partnership with current Ferrari designer Ross Brawn.

In an interview with F1 Racing magazine, the former team owner was quoted as saying that he has heard about the idea "being discussed" by the pair.  Jordan gave Schumacher his first chance in F1 at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix.  Schumacher’s talent was immediately recognized and it was arranged that Schumacher would transfer to the Benetton team prior to the next race.

“Team Schumacher Audi F1 or Team Schumacher Volkswagen F1 would immediately attract a huge following in Germany - and worldwide,” the magazine quoted him as speculating.

Former and/or current drivers have not had an especially successful turn as F1 team owners, the lone exception being Brabham but that was in the 1960’s, which was when F1 was a completely different era.

Former world champions Emerson Fittipaldi, John Surtees and most recently Alain Prost have not been especially successful and ending up leaving the sport.

Nice idea’s but he’s better off taking a senoir role with Ferrari rather than set up his own team. Less risky I say.

Certainly think that Michael Schumacher will consider a role in F1 after retiring , but that it will be after gaining managerial experience at Ferrari .

Cant imagine him committing his own money to the venture just yet.

As Eddie Jordan mentioned he would certainly be able to attract significant sponsorship as well as engine deals .

Michael to race for Redbull next year in exhange for 25% of the shares in squadro redbull would make more sense than him acquiring Renault.

It must seem like a good opportunity to Michael if he can purchase the remains of Renault if/when they throw in the towel, but as previously mentioned, it would be a huge risk and one that could damage his credibility in F1. I always felt he would take on an advisory role at Ferrari, perhaps helping out with driver development etc…
That would suit him better, I feel. But then again, what do I know? And as Murray Walker once said, “If is F1 spelt backwards!”
