Testing times 16th Feb Schumacher to buy Renault F1 Team?

February excites me !

February 17th, 2006

It’s this time of year that I really begin to get excited about the forthcoming formula 1 season. Football becomes slightly dull. As an Aston Villa fan, by this stage in the season we’re usually below the meaningful league positions (check), out of the league cup (check), out of the FA cup (not yet !! although we could be by Monday) and the prospect of the last 12 games of the season with no transfer dealings to look forward to makes me switch off and look elsewhere for sportular entertainment. Oh and I make up the odd word here and there too.

One of the places I usually look for alternative entertainment is Formula 1. By February, Formula 1 is usually promising great things to everybody for the forthcoming season. Promising that if you give her some of your time and ignore the gaps between the races she’ll take away all your troubles and make you forget about those other sports, boo hiss. Over the last half decade she has rather disappointed. Ferrari have steadfastly refused to make a sport of it, or rather everyone else has. Happy instead to trail around in a predictable line, save for Raikkonen nearly having the gall to snatch the WDC a few years ago. That changed last year with Alonso finally doing what no-one thought could be done.

Once again we come into February eagerly watching the testing times, telling ourselves that “yup, them there Williams’s’s’s look quick, ‘n them there Red Bullz look the biz”. Of course you can’t believe a bloody thing from testing other than maybe that some cars keep blowing up - oh the McPain of it all. But I think we can say that this season we wont be disappointed. Even if Ferrari do get back on top, oooo errr missus, it’ll at least be different to last year. Even if Alonso wins again, it’ll be nice to have the ‘change of the guard’ confirmed, and he’ll likely have been pushed a little harder by his team-mate. And of course if the unthinkable should happen and Kimi’s McSplosive takes him to the title, everyone will be relieved that he finally did it. No it’s hard to see how any WDC outcome this season can be seen as a disappointment. If anyone else should decide to win the WDC (are you listening Giancarlo and Juan) then that would just be a big bonus.

Roll on Bahrain and March 12th
